I really do not understand why we are having this totally irrelevant, costly and unwanted referendum. I know it came about as part of the negotiations for the LibDems going into coalition with the Tories, but I suspect there will be less than a 20% turnout in your manor, especially as there are no coincident council elections. A total waste of time and money!

At one time, the LibDems were actively promoting the idea of an EU in/out referendum, but like the tories, who reneged on their Lisbon Treaty referendum, when push came to shove you lot abandoned it - and abandoned us EU-sceptics at the same time.

Why the hell didn't Clegg at least hold out for a referendum on PR? At least a "yes" majority on PR may have led to a larger number of genuinely EU-sceptic MPs.

If AV is so brilliant I wonder why your leader didn't try for a referendum whereby the voting public is presented with a whole variety of different systems (FPTP, AV, AV+, PR etc.) and let people rank them in order of preference. Could it be that they don't think the public could grasp the complexity?

Hi Duncan,
Thanks for your continued support, and we hope you found the event on Wednesday useful. The introduction of AV announcements on buses would benefit not just the 2740 people in Wiltshire registered blind or partially sighted, but also people with other disabilities that rely on public transport. It would also be a real help in encouraging people visiting the area for the first time onto the buses! Thamesdown Transport in Swindon have taken positive steps with the introduction of AV, but other local operators have not followed their lead as yet, so your help is really appreciated.
Best,
James

Just a thought- why not make it manditory for new house builders to install (on top of efficent insulation etc) solar panels on EVERY new property, particularly shared accomodation like flats, not to sell energy back to the grid but to be used for the building itself. Surely this will help the energy situation and will be a cost effective due to the numbers being installed and will help boost the renewable energy industry thus creating jobs.

I believe the Swiss have a strategic rail plan for their country which contains ideas such as this: " ... all towns of 'n'000 people will be served by rail. Plans will be made for towns approaching 'n'000 people in the next 'x' years to be served by rail ..."
That's what I call 'strategic'! In Great Britain, re-organising the tracks at Reading and mixing airport and commuter passengers at Gatwick [again!] seems to be as strategic as we get.

Melksham is obviously, at 25,000*, quite big enough to justify a higher service level. It's an operational and legal convenience that it has only two trains a day. It's not the biggest place in Britain without a proper passenger train service, but it's likely the one where changes could be made most easily.

[*Horley in Surrey is about the same size, and has 3tph on weekdays, because it's lucky enough to be on the main Brighton line.]

This is great news and I can only hope that Duncan Hames can do this for the proposed developments around Chippenham. I met him briefly at a meeting concerning this issue which included the Friends of Birds Marsh. Apart from the fact that the developments will affect a lovely and environmentally sensitive area it is sheer madness to build on land that is waterlogged and prone to flooding. The road is supposed to be a relief road but how much traffic will it relieve if threes another 8,000 -10,000 people living in the area. The answer is simply none at all the traffic will simply expand to fill the available space.

My husband has to use the train to get into Bristol. Mostly there are a lot of unused first class carriages and only a few second class. It is often so over crowded that the commuters call the First Great Western train cattle class. In fact he commented that cattle wouldn’t be allowed to be treated like these passengers. He has to be dropped off at Chippenham because there isn’t a station at Corsham. In addition with the new MoD office, building a station there would be most useful.
